Based on extensive searching using the words "obesity" and "Saudi Arabia," teens of papers and reports were published about obesity in many national and international journals. Quick critical reading of these papers and reports gave us good idea regarding the trend of research about this topic in Saudi Arabia. We found that almost all published papers focused on prevalence in general and among different age groups, in addition to studying the relationship between weight status, dietary habits and lifestyles. Very few studies discussed dietary, pharmacological and surgical interventions among obese patients.
Studies regarding pathophysiology, biochemistry and secondary causes of obesity were not found. It is obvious that most of studies were cross-sectional and descriptive in nature, while prospective, retrospective and clinical trial studies were lacking. Based on these facts, it could be concluded that obesity in Saudi Arabia is am a major serious health problem, which needs further and new types of research mainly clinical trials, genetics, in addition to qualitative research, which deal with attitude of obese patients toward their problem and quality-of-life. Finally, Saudi Journal of Obesity welcome researchers from inside and outside Saudi Arabia to submit their works particularly those discuss different modalities of intervention and qualitative research.
